Loft turned Bedroom

Before I post Andrew's room, I better start at the beginning with what we started with. His room was an open loft area that we had made into a 4th bedroom upstairs. 

After adding trim and doors, he had a room! This was all before we moved in... But I want it documented.

Andrew's Bedroom

I started on Andrew's room after I finished Hudson & Grant's room, in the beginning of August. 

The current guest room was going to be the nursery and since we are waiting to finish the basement ($$$ and not hiring anyone to do major work in our home until baby girl is at least a toddler)... we needed somewhere for people to sleep when they come and visit. The best option at this point is to give Andrew the queen bed from the guest room and to use his room as the guest room when we have visitors. 

After planning on where things would go in his room, Dave got started on building Andrew a headboard.

When we first moved in there was a dog run on the side of our house behind the garage. It was made out of a bunch of old, weathered boards. Some were warped and some were still pretty straight. Dave took it out and we were left with a bunch of "good" wood. Want to build a headboard for me? Pretty please? :)

Time to sand off the old white paint :)

*random story*

When we turned the loft into a bedroom we were told there wasn't a heating/cooling vent in the room. We thought that was strange and after looking into what it would cost to put one in, figured Andrew could use a fan or a room heater if he needed it. He lived in his room for almost a year and a half and had no complants, so we didn't think about it anymore.THEN, when I was painting, I moved the chair (pic above) to paint near the ceiling and the leg dipped down into something, making the chair rock... huh.... I pulled back the carpet and what do you know, there IS a vent. Whoever did the AWESOME carpeting job (another story for another day) carpeted over it. (Even after cutting the carpet pad around it?) 

I cut a hole in the carpet, we bought a vent cover and now Andrew's room has hear/air like the rest of the house :)

Here is his room today! 

We had this map in his old room, and love it. 

Serisouly LOVE the headboard Dave made... 

(We have plans to use up more of that wood in other areas of our home)

We have the bed up on risers so I made a custom bedskirt out of an old sheet and a cheap twin sheet set. (We store our extra blankets and pillows under his bed.)

The planets were also in his old room, along with his subway art

This room has a lot less wall space than his old one, but we still wanted to display his license plate collection so we put it in the closet. why not? (along with his file box)

We keep almost all of their toys in the basement but I don't want Legos mixed in with the rest of the toys, so they are kept in this trunk in his closet. 

 His bulletin board is on the back of his door 

Shelves to display collections and prized possessions 

(trophies, cub scout pinewood derby car, rocket and rain gutter regatta boat).

We did the same curtain rod as in H&G's room. 

Andrew made some art work to display in one of the frames. 

There you go, not a bad room for a 9 year old? 

(or a boy of any age really?)

Hudson & Grant's Bedroom

Back in the beginning of July I started on Hudson and Grants room. The first thing we did was take the closet doors OFF. They were always coming off their tracks and it was hard for both boys to get to their clothes, having to slide a door or two over, so I decided it would be better to just have them off for now. 

To make the closet feel more "done" I decided to paint it.. 

* I also painted the walls in their room, no during pictures...

When I couldn't find curtains I liked, I found fabric I liked and backed it with an old sheet to make them thicker. 

We didn't need to buy much for this room re-do, but we did buy some new green bed spreads. (Ikea)

This shelf has a special story. 

Back in the summer of 2011, Dave and I went to Carmel, CA for a get-a-way. The last morning we were there we decided to take a walk along the beach. We found this old board, might be a railroad tie, we aren't sure, but it was washed up on the beach and the PERFECT size for a shelf! I convinced Dave to help me carry it back to our car (Man, it was HEAVY!). We drove that water-logged board back to CO! It sat in our old garage, and then our new house's garage, for two years...waiting until we did the little boys bedroom.... I found a cool way to install it so it looks like it is floating (you can't see any brackets), and we love it!

Ok, here you go, the final reveal of Hudson & Grant's bedroom. Pics aren't the best, I am not a photographer by any means, but you get the idea :)

Having the closet doors off is awesome. We have packed in a lot of stuff into that closet, but it is pretty organized and it works. 

The shelf above the clothes is a great place to display stuff. At the end of the shelf are two big file boxes. Someday I will show you what those are, but each boy has one and inside of them are files to organize their favorite bday cards, school projects, grades, pics etc from each year. 

Each boy has a container to keep their "treasures". This basket is Grants and Hudson's is the orange suitcase on the floating shelf.

I made these a couple of years ago. (w/o the crossed out names)

 Each boy also has a bulletin board that they can display whatever they want on. I just wrapped the boards with wire and found tiny clothes pins for them to attach their stuff with. 

On top of the bookcase is a globe lamp

Hudson's dresser (Grant's is the one in the closet). 

Blue bin has his Lego's.

These airplanes have been in many rooms, starting with Andrew's nursery. 

The green bean bag is actually a bean bag cover that I made that they keep all of their stuffed animals in. 

Love their curtain rod! It is made from plumbing materials and isn't going anywhere! For those of you with boys, know how fast curtain rods get pulled on, ripped out of the walls etc. 

Each bed has a little shelf for the books they are reading. I also made the initial pillows for their beds.
