Water isn't always a good thing

It has been a crazy few days to say the least! Our dog (Colby, who is 9 years old next week and very calm normally in his old age) was acting very strange the first night in the new house when we weren't around- but totally normal when we were.... We went to church Sunday morning and put him in the basement, like we have always done and he had ripped up a bunch of stuff while while we were gone- including the baby mattress-down to the springs!

The story continues... we found the mess right before leaving to go to a friends house for dinner... so we put him in the powder room, thinking he couldn't destroy anything in there (we had left him in my large closet in the old house many times... and he just slept... so I wasn't concerned that it was too small of a space or anything...)... while we were gone he chewed through the steel coated pipe connected to the toilet and flooded part of the main floor and 1/2 of the basement! Poor Colby obviously freaked out and I am sure was traumatized being sprayed with water for hours while being trapped in a bathroom!

When we got home Dave was the first to walk in and was really confused why the floor was wet until he let Colby out of the bathroom and saw the water spraying!

We called the home insurance company right away and they sent a company out here for 1/2 of Monday and 1/2 of Tuesday-- ripping out damaged stuff, big fans and dehumidifiers drying everything out - running 24 hours a day... they were LOUD let me tell you!

Wednesday they came and checked on things, moved some fans and dehumidifiers around and tented the tile floor, which wasn't drying out as it should...
Thursday a guy came and tested the tile and it is still really wet...

Not what you want to happen the day after you move in! Colby hasn't gotten into or destroyed anything for at least 5 years, and never anything like this, so this really threw us for a loop. Thankfully he seems fine now.

Pictures telling the story- keep in mind we had moved in the DAY before and hadn't touched the basement.. so it was a mess to begin with! It is finished, but done very poorly and something we plan on re-doing in the future...

After Dave turned off the water and threw a bunch of towels on the floor to get some water up.

This is where Colby chewed the pipe...

Water going down the stairs into the basement.

The side of the wall as you are entering the basement

My food storage closet-- there was 4" of water on the whole floor in here.

Where the carpet looks darker- is really really wet.

The ceiling down here is a drop ceiling- a bunch of tiles broke- see the one that broke on the vacuum?

This is part of the mess that Colby made- the pile in front of the crib was all in that closet before he got to it...

The other mess he made- the gray thing on the left was the baby mattress!

It was like walking in a deep puddle in some places.
 Under the furnace got wet...

These pictures are from when the "clean up team" came in...

We moved all of our stuff to the dry side of the basement Sunday night...

 * Side story--- the day we moved in we heard a churping... it sounded like a smoke alarm that needed new batteries but we couldn't find it for the life of us! Monday when the team was here they pulled down any wet tiles that hadn't come down by themselves and low and behold- there was a smoke alarm under one of them- we NEVER would have found it there! Thankfully the battery is now out and no more churping! Just really loud fans and dehumidifiers...

They pulled out all of the carpet padding that was wet and pulled back the carpet and put the fans underneath to dry out the sub floors....

The dehumidifiers have little tubes that go to the sinks...
The next day (Tuesday) they came and moved things around after testing what was still wet...

Then on Wednesday everything except the tile (which we hate and secretly really hope doesn't dry out since we are replacing it soon anyways and this could help us out)... was dry, so they made this tent and hooked a dehumidifier up to it...

Thursday update:
Still wet.. Guys come on Monday to tell us what the news is...

Monday Update:
Tile didn't dry out at all. Still the same. Which means that we will be getting a check to cover all of the repairs- which works great for us because we can do a lot of the easy work ourselves and hopefully find some great deals on the things we can't/don't want to do- like laying hardwood floors!

Stay tuned! Looks like we are going to be working on some bigger projects sooner than we had planned!
